Schools & Expanded Learning
The more connections AfterZones can build with the School Department, the greater the likelihood of sustainability and success. And the more that AfterZones are connected with in-school learning, the greater the success of engaged youth.
Club AfterZone
Club AfterZone serves as a daily learning time where middle-school participants can choose between numerous fun, yet structured, opportunities. Balancing choice and the needs of participating youth, the Club includes:
- homework assistance
- group study or reading time
- study skills clinics
- focused discussion groups
- workshops
- art activities
- educational games
- instructional recreation, using the nationally recognized SPARK curriculum
These activities are led by part-time AfterZone Youth Engagement Specialists, City Year and AmeriCorps members and college volunteers.
Club AZ operates one hour each day, opposite students’ chosen enrichment activity, allowing middle school youth to choose a variety of programs one to four days a week.
Because students are engaged in developing the look and feel of Club AfterZone - through their artwork, displays, music selections, development of ground rules and student-led workshops - the Club is a place they feel comfortable and welcomed, creating a positive learning environment while improving retention.
Teachers and AfterZone Programs
While many AfterZone programs are led by quality community educators not employed by the School Department, a number of programs enlist the expertise of Providence’s teachers. Other teachers also join in Club AfterZone, working with students on academic skills and other learning activities. Partnering with teachers strengthens the bridge between out-of-school and in-school learning, as well as ties between PASA and the School Department.
Class Credit
PASA is exploring the idea of offering students academic credit for participating in the AfterZones. Pilot projects are underway with teachers interested in offering credit for programming that complements and enriches in-class learning and allows students to complete related projects or make in-class presentations. PASA will work with the Director of Expanded Learning at the school district to build on these exploratory ventures.
